Andrea Mazzocchi, PhD and Katie-Rose Skelly, MS founded Known Medicine in 2020 with the goal of finding the right treatment for every cancer patient. Mazzocchi, who had spent half a decade designing cancer-relevant biomaterials, and Skelly, an AI-for-drug-discovery data scientist, knew that the key to building our predictive engine lay in our dataset creation.
Soon after founding, the company joined Y Combinator’s first fully remote batch as well as the Altitude Lab incubator in Salt Lake City. While initial experiments were run in the state-of-the-art incubator space by Mazzocchi and Skelly, experimental demands soon outstripped capacity. In early 2021 the team grew to four and moved into a built-out lab space in the University of Utah’s Research Park.
Throughout 2021 Known Medicine saw phenomenal growth, closing out the year with 13 team members, a seed fundraise completed, hundreds of patient samples processed, and millions of images added to our dataset.
